Diabetes Q & A

Why do I have diabetes?

Diabetes refers to a condition that disrupts the way your body uses glucose, or blood sugar. Glucose is an essential fuel for cellular functions, and when it enters your bloodstream, your pancreas releases insulin to help your cells absorb it.

However, if you have Type 1 diabetes and your body doesn’t produce insulin, the sugar builds up in your bloodstream. Type 1 is thought to be an autoimmune disorder in which your immune system mistakenly attacks healthy insulin-producing cells in your pancreas.

If you have Type 2 diabetes, your body may produce low levels of insulin, or your body becomes resistant to insulin.

In both cases, your blood sugar rises to unmanageable levels over time and can lead to other life-threatening conditions like heart disease.

What are the symptoms of diabetes?

Warning signs of diabetes can include:

  • Unexpected weight loss
  • Constant thirst and hunger
  • Frequent urination
  • Irritability and mood swings
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Slow-healing wounds
  • Numbness in your extremities

Diabetes symptoms vary depending on what type you have. If you have Type 1, your symptoms develop suddenly, but if you have Type 2, symptoms appear more gradually and are often mistaken for other illnesses.

How do you treat diabetes?

After diagnosing you with either prediabetes, Type 1, or Type 2 diabetes, Dr. Hosoda discusses your lab results with you and develops a personalized treatment plan that takes your physical condition and everyday lifestyle into account.

Dr. Hosoda prescribes insulin for patients with Type 1 diabetes, along with a list of suggested lifestyle changes. For patients with Type 2 diabetes, Dr. Hosoda may also prescribe insulin, but she has great success treating these patients with lifestyle changes alone.

Using dietary and nutritional counseling, along with meal and exercise planning, Dr. Hosoda can help reverse your Type 2 diabetes so that you no longer need treatment in the future.
